Chapter 12

We wake. We make love. I can’t describe it any other way. It feels like it. I’m so warm, so safe in his arms. I’m a stupid, infatuated girl. He’s much, much older and comes from another world. I don’t know if there’s a future for us, but at least I can give him his. There’s no way I can check if Dad’s responded without Martin knowing I did something, so I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

I watch in silence as he gets dressed. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen him fully dressed in dry, clean clothes. Seeing his muscular arms, with the tribal-looking tattoos disappearing under the short sleeve of the T-shirt, reminds me of the first few minutes after he stepped into my house, into my life. I’ve lost track of the days. Is it four? I’m not sure. It feels like an eternity.

Martin is a flurry of activity.

“Can I take a couple of cans with me?” He indicates toward my meager food supplies.

“Sure,” I say, tonelessly.

He comes up to me and grips my chin gently. “Mia, sweetheart. I’m sorry. You knew this day was coming.”

I nod and swallow against the heavy stone lodged in my chest. He pulls me into one of our last embraces.

“Hon—” His voice is rough. “There’s nothing to do. Live your life. Stop hiding. Face your demons and get back out there. You deserve it.”

In the absolute silence that mounts between us all I hear is our breaths. Then we both stiffen. There’s a distant murmur. Martin’s face turns to stone in an instant. He darts to the window, partially hiding behind the curtain as he peeks out.

Then the world explodes in shards of broken glass, light and smoke. The sound is deafening. I can’t breathe. I fall to the floor, my eyes squeezed shut, a hand over my mouth, the other covering an ear. I think I scream, but I don’t know what is what in the cacophony that erupts. The door is slammed open, roaring men’s voices fill my world. Jack barks and barks, but I can’t locate him. I can’t comfort him.

“On the floor, on the floor!”

“Don’t shoot,” I cry. “Don’t kill him!” I throw myself over Martin, trying to protect him with my body, but I’m ripped off him. Our eyes connect as they whip him around on his stomach and cuff him. Through the smoke that’s started to dissolve I see a crowd of black-clad men, all pointing their guns at us.

I scream from the pain when they push me down and pull my arms up on my back, cuffing me as well.

His eyes are so desolate. I’ve never seen such despair in another person’s eyes in my life. It equals what I saw in the mirror after Mom had died. I’m pulled to my feet by my already aching upper arms, screaming in agony.

“Don’t touch her,” roars Martin.

“Shut the fuck up, you sicko.” The butt of a gun is slammed on his head and blood starts pouring down his face.
